College Major

So I Have This Friend: Give your best advice to this friend.
So I have this friend... He's choosing colleges and declaring a major. What field would you recommend he study that will be vital for the next generation?

We Have A Winner!!! 03/19/10
Finance, with a minor in one of the humanities.

The first because it's a specific skill set that's applicable in a variety of careers and jobs. The second because it's what turns you into an educated person as it teaches you how to learn. If you learn how to learn, think critically, think creatively, you can do well at any job.
Winner: TMC @ Return to Rural (@returntorural)
Reason: Her answer makes a lot of sense. Really, any major that teaches you "how to lear, think critically, think creatively" is a great choice.

The field doesn't matter. We will always need people in social work positions, health care roles, technology, teachers, researchers, politicians (yes, even politicians), etc. Take a breath, relax, and choose something you'll love doing for a long time.

Then pick a language that applies well and throw yourself behind it. Being able to communicate with a wide variety of people and cultures will put you above the rest.

Good luck!

We need people who are motivated, devoted, and passionate about pursuing careers in fields where money is not the greatest currency. Our education system is failing - we need inspired teachers but we also need advocates to fight for the best education for all children. We need social workers willing to take on the burden of the heart break in order to truly save lives. We need lawyers willing to sacrifice the money in order to defend those who can not afford the most expensive law firms but who deserve the same access to their legal rights. One should not be guilty due to poverty. We need doctors to work in the inner cities and in incredible programs like Doctors Without Borders and Mercy Ships. Pick a field where you can make a difference in the world, where you will be serving others instead of yourself and where you can use the skills you have been given to ease the suffering of others. Life is not what you receive, it is about what you give.

I would say the health care field. That's a career field that will never go away. There will always be a need for great health care professionals. People will always get sick and emergencies will continue to happen. You could help save lives and care for the sick and healthy alike.

Wise advice from an uncle:

It doesn't matter what you major in - heck, it could be basketweaving - as long as you finish college. Because we all know, once you're out in the professional world, you won't use your major...just the general knowledge you gained in college.

(I just wish he gave me that advice before I busted my butt in a marketing major only to burn out and not finish)

Tell him to major in Political Science! Aim for public office. Heck, if all those current Bozos could get elected to Congress, then he probably could too!
