Actually, they allowed the public to vote on the octopus. Always risky. What would you suggest naming him?

    I christen Mr. Octopus "Pieces of Eight," a fitting tribute because not only do his eight legs-worth of suction cups resemble Spanish silver coins (<-- Well, they do if you squint.), but he is far too fascinated by boat propellers.
